GivingTuesday is known as a global day of giving to support nonprofits around the world. It happens every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and kicks off the giving season.
What is GivingTuesday?
Established in 2012, GivingTuesday is a day of celebrating generosity and doing good. In 2022, organizations in 85 countries participated in GivingTuesday. In the United States, participants gave $3.1 billion in online and offline donations combined. In addition, more than 10 million people in the U.S. volunteered that day.
How to Engage your Family in GivingTuesday
Empower your entire family during GivingTuesday with our simple ideas to engage in kindness, generosity, and service.
Dialogue with Your Kids
- Share what GivingTuesday is about with your children. Boil it down to basics, and ask each other questions. Let your children be the guides.
- Have a family discussion about the causes that most resonate for each family member. For example, you may notice that your children are drawn to animals. Ask them why they care and how they may want to help.
Engage in Action
- Make the service concrete with simple projects in the neighborhood or local community. Sometimes we feel giving back means going somewhere else, but it can be simple as picking up trash, giving water to construction workers, or delivering goodies to an elderly neighbor.
- Set up Save, Spend, Give jars to encourage your kids to give to causes important to them. Any time they earn money for chores, remind them that giving is an important component of how they manage their money.
- Donate gently used books, clothes, and toys to a shelter or youth home. It’s important to highlight that we want to donate things we would still want to receive versus just giving away our leftovers.
- Organize a neighborhood drive to collect essential care items for a favorite nonprofit. This can be a fun project to do with visiting family members or neighborhood pals.
Consistency is Key
GivingTuesday is just one day. Make this important day an annual jumpstart to a more regular practice of giving back. Remember that consistency is key to establishing a habit. The more we practice, the stronger our compassion muscle becomes.
Have Fun
Kids will connect more to any activity if it feels fun and engaging. Keep the activities light, smile, and have fun.
